We are often asked how we do what we do. We don’t have it all figured out, but we do have some basics we are happy to share! The first step to living a life of travel is figuring out how you can make it work, and working toward that goal. One of the most important things to being able to travel is having a location independent stream of income, such as a great retirement, remote job, or other streams of income. Easier said than done, right? Many people who we know who travel have their own businesses, whether they be online Amazon, or etsy shops, network marketing reps, or successful bloggers. Other people work remotely for larger companies, work part of the year as house flippers, rent out their houses or other properties, and many other travelers have retired. The range of the ways people make this lifestyle work is endless. The biggest hurdle to living a life of travel, for most people, is how to make it work financially. If you can’t figure this first step out, find a way to! It will make this lifestyle so much easier, and more attainable.
Another big factor in making this lifestyle work is setting a budget that is within, or even below your means to make this a possibility for a long period of time if desired. In addition to working while we travel, a big part of how we make this lifestyle work is by keeping a budget, traveling smart over extravagantly. Start researching ways that you can travel on a budget, and you will be doing yourself a big favor when the time comes to start traveling!
The next step for most people after they find a remote source of income, is downsizing. Whether that just be getting rid of some possessions, or selling a home and cars, this step can take a long time. It is an exhausting part of the process, depending on how much you are planning to get rid of, but in the end, it feels pretty good to learn to live with less. I had to let go of some of my sentimental thoughts with some of our things that were weighing us down, and the more I got rid of, the easier this was to do. We still have all of our important things, though, most is in boxes. Besides pictures and papers, and a bin of clothes each, we can’t really remember what we kept, but I assure you it was important! 🙂 There are probably a few more boxes that we will get rid of down the road I am sure.
If you have kids, picking a curriculum, or online school to attend is another important piece of the puzzle.
After you have researched, set up some plans, and downsized, you are ready to work towards your preferred route of travel. Buy those plane tickets, that RV, or boat. Plan out your possible routes and make reservations ahead of time if possible.
The last step is to stay calm, be flexible, and have fun, (and dance like Ellie does)!
